General Rant
Hashnode's prompt starts with "Write your story..."
Here's mine.
This week has been so weird. Has to be the week with my most complex task yet. I mean, I HAVEN'T MADE A PR ALL WEEK!!!
And this is after like two video meetings with my mentor.
Granted, this week was busy. I travelled during the week, but it didn't really affect my work rate. I just haven't gotten the "aha" moment to know exactly what/how to do what I need to.
This week's theme - Think About Your Audience
My goal for this week's blog is to explain my project to a newcomer. I'd try to do so in subsequent paragraphs.
What Organization do I work for under Outreachy?
CHAOSS stands for Community Health Analysis Open Source Software.
It is a Linux Foundation project that uses analytics and metrics to measure open source community health. Right now, it currently has three software that it uses to do this, namely: Augur, Grimoirelab and Cregit.
I work with Augur and my job is to make its documentation more inclusive -essentially accessible and usable by all professional levels (i.e beginner or expert/ techie or non-techie).
Augur is a software that presents metrics on open source software development project health and sustainability. Basically, it gives you statistics on how your open source project/community is doing. In terms of PRs, issues created, contributions made, tone of messages in your issue comments using ML, etc. For example, compared to Github, Augur has a feature that categories people who create issue comments, pull request comments, label addition etc as contributors, as opposed to just committers like Github, does.
This past week, my job has been to convert this schema into content that explains appropriately to users of the software or just visitors of the website, the data augur collects and what they mean.
It's been a week of "the new", so maybe that's why I've had a little difficulty putting it into words. I'm hoping by the time I'm done, the next user won't be as confused as I am right now.
Dear future users, you're welcome in advance. Hehe.
Anyway, I've spent so much time on it, that one of my mentors figured he'd introduce me to other members of the community that have worked/are working on it this week.
We even have a doc made public to members of the community right now so they can drop other suggestions for me.
I'm interested to see what this week would be like.
Stuff I Learned This Past Week:
More on workers/machine learning. Augur has a lot of workers and machine learning going on behind the scenes to be able to generate these metrics that it does.
How to make use of the original readthedocs template using this tutorial. I'm still on this by the way.
How much work the open-source goes into providing these tools that seem little, but help us out so much, and for free!
The US has a national day for mourning.
Pats On The Back:
I kept asking questions for clarity. I haven't gotten it yet (my brain feels like mush, lol), but I'm trying to. I honestly don't know why it's taking so long.
I gave a talk on technical writing at the uni I graduated from. It was a proud moment for me. I somehow didn't die from nervousness. ๐ฅ to more talks. I hope I get better at my craft so I don't bullshit people.
Anything Else?
- Travelling to Enugu and being with my tech fam always motivates me. Right now, "a lot" is going through me, but seeing them made me both happy and motivated.
- Also, my friend travelled out of the country (japa-ed), I'm not as sad as I thought i'd be. I'm more motivated to work hard.
What else?
Oh, I have just two months left of NYSC. Bliss!
I miss my friend, Sophia.
Until next time, mis amores.
